Dead of Eve by Pam GodwinMy rating: 5 of 5 stars
Holy Fucktoids!
This books is in a category all by itself, no comparisons!
Brilliant. Thrilling. Horrific. Suspenseful. Apocalyptic. Imaginative. Lustful.
Picture the world falling apart, a deadly virus had turned humans into monsters, and the only hope is a woman-Evie. She has the skills to kill and can outrun, outsmart, and defeat the enemy. This is my Evie...
SPOILER ALERT
Please do NOT continue if you haven't read the book!
I cursed the author after Joel died. He was the strength Evie needed to survive after her children died and the outbreak spread. It was then that I realized, this story wasn't meant for the HEA that I'm used to. I was going to experience loss, pain (physical & emotional), fear, courage, temptation, lust, and trying to find the will to survive.
The ghosts of The A's haunted my dreams during the first half of the book. It wasn't until the end, when Jesse revealed that Aaron and Annie were responsible for him finding Evie, that I finally came to grips with the harshness of her children's death. As erie was it was, it was also comforting once I understood it. Then when Annie said "Mama...we have to go, but Dada says we'll see you again someday", I shed a tear and finally accepted Joel's fate.
The Drone and his brother scared the SHIT out of me. Call me paranoid or crazy (because I've seen to many movies) but I fear that one day there will be an actual outbreak (of some kind) that will affect millions and destroy (a majority of) civilization. What makes it even more terrifying is when Religion is brought into it. Whether you believe in God, the Devil, Allah, or the Tooth Fairy, people's religious beliefs are the strongest determination for a plan of this magnitude.
The most important piece of the puzzle. Joel told Evie to trust Mind, Body, and Soul...The Guardians. When she finally pieced it all together, it was like seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. I heard the angels sing their praises. I felt a rush of relief through my veins. And I finally took my first deep breath of air since starting this book.
Roark, Jesse, and Michio...the ultimate male trifecta. My God, they were delicious, too. Roark, the priest, the forbidden fruit. The guardian of her soul. I'm going to hell for wanting to seduce a man of the cloth. Jesse, he was mysterious and protective. I was sad when she left him behind but overwhelmed when he followed and protected her. I felt even closer to him when he finally helped decipher the meaning of her visions. He was the guardian of her mind. Then Michio, the doctor and guardian of her body, who started off as a friendly enemy then became a passionate lover. She wouldn't have been able to survive without these three men.
"Humanity might be dependent on the most unlikely of heroes, but I had the Yang to my Yin, the Adam to my Eve. Three guarians. Three reasons to care, to fight, to live" - Evie
I may never be the same after reading this book. Bravo, Mrs. Godwin...you really are an evil bitch ;)
Note: Since reading this book, I've become friends with this author and I can say without a doubt, that she's the most unique individual that I've ever come across. She's currently writing two more books to this series, plus another one (unrelated to this story). She's a very talented writer, so I hope you enjoy her writing as much as I do. That is all :)
